Summer Youth Program Director

Lead the planning, delivery, and evaluation of our summer camp for youth in grades 2–9.

Position Overview

The Program Director is responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Camp Kiwanilong Summer Youth Program (SYP). The Director oversees program delivery, seasonal staff leadership, and daily camp operations while ensuring a safe and engaging camp experience for campers entering 2nd through 9th grade, supported by a seasonal staff of high school and college-age counselors. This role works closely with the Board of Directors, administrative staff, and camp ranger to support youth development, community connection, and responsible stewardship of camp facilities.

Time Commitment

  • Attendance at regular board meetings and program planning meetings
  • Approximately six months of weekly engagement: season planning begins October–November, ramping up through spring hiring and training into the summer program
  • Full-time presence during staff training and the summer program season
  • Off-season: facilitating and monitoring enrollment, registration rollover, and camper recruitment

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate Summer Youth Program activities
  • Ensure programming supports youth development and camper engagement
  • Maintain safety standards including risk management and emergency procedures, applying ACA accreditation standards as guidance in partnership with the Board

Financial Management

  • Develop and manage the seasonal program budget
  • Monitor program expenses and maintain financial records

Staff Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise seasonal camp staff (high school and college-age)
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and performance evaluation throughout the season

Camp Operations

  • Oversee daily camp activities, schedules, and camper supervision
  • Ensure compliance with health, food service, and safety requirements
  • Maintain camper records and program documentation

Enrollment & Outreach

  • Support camper recruitment and program promotion
  • Update and roll over camper records; create registration
  • Facilitate and monitor enrollment in the off-season

Property Stewardship

  • Ensure responsible use of camp facilities and program equipment
  • Coordinate with the Camp Ranger regarding property use and maintenance needs

Qualifications

  • Experience in youth programs, camps, outdoor education, or recreation programs
  • Experience working with youth in grades 2–9 and with parents/guardians
  • Leadership experience supervising staff or teams
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • A degree in outdoor recreation, education, youth development, or a related field is preferred
  • Familiarity with ACA accreditation standards preferred
  • Experience with, or willingness to learn, CampSite software and Google Workspace
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check
